Farmers Breakfast

Today, I spent the morning at our annual Farmers Breakfast discussing all things agriculture with a packed room at the West Pennsboro Fire Company. We had a presentation from Penn State Extension’s Leon Ressler on the “State of Farming in PA.” It was a very comprehensive look at agricultural issues within the state, grain prices, H1H1 and more. Our local conservation district and the USDA provided information at their respective tables, and we thanked them for their information on available grants. After that presentation, I spoke about my House Bill 1995, which prohibits investment in Pennsylvania agriculture by foreign adversaries. We also discussed exemptions for farmers on municipal stormwater fees, and House Bill 2393, a new bill introduced to regulate food processing residuals. We had a lot of great questions and comments from the crowd. Big Spring FFA was also in attendance. Thank you to everyone who attended this delicious and informative breakfast provided by Chas Finkenbinder and Country Butcher Shop.

Ice Cream & Issues

On Wednesday I continued my Ice Cream & Issues gatherings around the district in Carlisle at Letort Park. We enjoyed some ice cream while I gave a state budget update and discussed legislative issues that have a direct impact on you and our communities. Thank you to all who came out!

The Giant Company Celebrates 100 Years

On Monday, it was my pleasure to present The Giant Company president John Ruane with a Pennsylvania House citation in celebration of The GIANT Company’s 100-year anniversary! I know firsthand how hard Giant employees work to be great community stewards, as well as getting the best price for their food offerings. I used to work there. The Giant employees live here and shop here, and they want the best for their families too. Aside from their great food, Giant sponsors countless sporting events, nonprofit events, fire and police activities, and more. Having humble beginnings in downtown Carlisle, Giant has grown to be an integral part of our daily lives in the district.

Constitution Day

Tuesday, Sept. 17, was Constitution Day and Citizenship Day! It is a day set aside to commemorate the formation and signing of the U.S. Constitution on Sept. 17, 1787, in Philadelphia. I was honored to provide copies of both the U.S. and PA constitutions to 11th graders in all my school districts to use in the classrooms on this special day!

Mail-in Ballot Update
Mail in ballots, except the area in the 117th Legislative District, can now be processed by the counties since the PA Department of State certified the candidates to be placed on the ballot on Monday afternoon.

Royal Ranger Award

Congratulations to my constituent, Alan Harris, who completed his Royal Ranger Gold Medal Ceremony this month. I was honored to be able to award an official Pennsylvania House of Representatives citation to him for his commendable accomplishment. Thanks to my staff member, Joshua Reynolds, for attending as well.

Be Prepared!

September is National Preparedness Month (NPM), and this year the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is placing special focus on the importance of starting the conversation about disasters that could occur where you live or work.

Talking about potential emergencies can help everyone take the steps necessary to prepare, such as:

Creating a family emergency plan to stay connected in case of emergency.
Familiarizing yourself with tips to navigate an evacuation.
Building an emergency supplies kit in the event you need to survive on your own for several days

Learn more about potential hazards and how to prepare for them at ready.gov.

September is Suicide Prevention Awareness Month

Suicide claims the lives of over 2,000 Pennsylvanians each year. That’s an average of five lives lost EACH DAY.

Nationwide, suicide is the 10th leading cause of death, with one suicide occurring every 11.1 minutes. There are more than 1 million suicide attempts each year. This tragedy affects ALL ages, races, genders, sexuality, denominations, incomes and educational levels. It can affect anyone and everyone.

September is Suicide Prevention Awareness Month, a time to remember and honor those lost to suicide, as well as support suicide attempt survivors and all who experience suicidal ideation, mental health challenges and crisis every day.

It is important to remember help is available. Just dial 988 to connect with the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
