Poll Workers Sought for Upcoming Election

Beyond exercising your right to vote, what can you do to help elections run smoothly across the Commonwealth? Consider serving as a poll worker in the upcoming election on Tuesday, Nov. 5.

Open positions vary by county but may include judge of elections, majority inspector and minority inspector, which are elected positions. Counties also need clerks and machine operators/inspectors at each precinct. These positions are filled by appointment.

Counties train poll workers on their election day duties. Workers receive payment for training and for their service on election day.

In order to serve, you must be registered to vote in the county where you wish to work. Exceptions exist for 17-year-old high school students; contact your county election office for more information. Government officials and government employees generally are not allowed to serve as poll workers. Likewise, you are not permitted to serve if your name appears on the ballot.

Poll workers generally work for the entire day on election day, from before the time the polls open at 7 a.m., until after the polls close at 8 p.m.

People interested in serving as poll workers should start by filling out this form.  If you have questions, call 877-VOTESPA (877-868-3772) or email re-voterreg@pa.gov.

Treasury’s Transparency Portal Reveals County-Level Data

The Pennsylvania Treasury Department’s award-winning Transparency Portal now includes details about how residents of every county across the state are taking advantage of the PA 529 College and Career Savings Program, the PA ABLE Savings Program for people with disabilities, and Keystone Scholars, which provides a $100 jumpstart for education savings for every baby born in Pennsylvania.

The county-level data feature also shows how much of the $4.5 billion in unclaimed property in Treasury’s care is available to claim in each county.

Pennsylvanians can explore all the portal’s features to dive deep into the state budget, state contracts and more.

New Law to Boost Reporting of Data Breaches

The Office of Attorney General has launched an online portal to streamline the process for companies and other entities required to report data breaches under a new state law adopted earlier this year.

Act 33 of 2024, which takes effect later this month, requires reporting of data breaches impacting more than 500 Pennsylvanians. The companies must also provide impacted individuals with 12 months of free credit monitoring and access to a free credit report, if the breach involves the person’s name and Social Security number, bank account number, or driver’s license or state ID number.

The portal is available here

Cleaning Up Regulations that No Longer Serve the Public Interest

At the direction of House Republicans and various standing House committees, the Independent Regulatory Review Commission (IRRC) recently completed a two-year-long review that found numerous regulations no longer in the public interest.

This is great news for the Commonwealth, as overregulation hinders economic growth, impedes our ability to govern ourselves and sometimes confuses the public. Streamlining government and reducing the size and scope of our administrative state has long been, and continues to be, a focus of House Republicans.

The report and orders issued by IRRC last week are another successful step in holding government accountable to itself and, most importantly, the people of Pennsylvania. Click here to learn more.

Boating Facility Grants Available

The Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission (PFBC) is seeking applications for the next round of Boating Facility Grants to help communities capitalize on the surge in new boating activity.

The Boating Facility Grant Program provides grants for planning, acquisition, development, expansion and rehabilitation of public boating facilities located on the waters of the Commonwealth. Funding requests require a 50% match.

The PFBC encourages townships, boroughs, and municipal and county governments to apply. Nonprofit groups, including land trusts, conservancies and watershed associations, are also eligible to apply. Private businesses and service clubs are not eligible for direct funding but are encouraged to partner with their local county or municipality.

The deadline to apply is Saturday, Nov. 30. More information is available here.

Annual Sunflower Festival

The Annual Sunflower Festival is tomorrow from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Meadowbrooke Gourds in Newville!

The Sunflower Festival is rain or shine. They have been busy cleaning out the gourd storage buildings so the artisan craft and food vendors can be indoors! The scarecrow making activity will also be indoors for this event.

They will still have all the food trucks, live music, Oops Sale, face painting, pumpkin patch, 7,000 sq. ft. gift shop and more! There will be indoor seating as well as tented outdoor seating areas available. Acres and acres of free sunflowers are still available for picking.

Unfortunately, the trolley rides around the farm are canceled for the event due to the wet fields. I hope to see you there!
